Deakin
to host global food security forum
Is
food only for those who can afford it? Or is it a human right?
Deakin
University’s new Alfred Deakin Institute has
joined with World Vision, the International Women’s
Development Agency and AusAID to stage a major forum on global
food security next month.
Under the banner One Just World, the forum will address
the issue: Is food only for those who can afford it? Or is
it a human right?
“In Australia, food prices have risen by between 40
and 100 per cent over the last three years, creating real
problems for individuals and families,” Deakin University’s
Associate Professor Matthew Clarke.
“But the scale of hardship
here is dwarfed by the situation in developing countries
where more than 800 million people do not get enough regular,
healthy food and up two billion lack food security.”
The Geelong event is part of a national series of free forums
that was launched last July by the Parliamentary Secretary
for International Development Assistance, Senator Bob McMullan.
The series aims to engage the public
in conversation and debate about global poverty and development
issues; and is also about encouraging action – active participation
in development, including volunteering, pro bono support
and working in the sector. In addition, it offers a
forum for ideas and viewpoints for policy development in
international aid and development.
Speakers include:
David Lansley – Senior
Economist, World Vision Australia, specialising in the
food crisis in developing countries
Dr Alice Pollard – a specialist
in gender and development, and one of the Solomon Islands
most prominent women leaders.
The moderator is Warwick Hadfield.
