Deakin researchers win Marcus A. Grossman Young
Author Award
Deakin
researchers Dale Atwell and Dr Matthew Barnett have won the internationally
regarded Marcus A. Grossman Young Author Award.
The prestigious prize for researchers under 40 years of age is awarded
each year by ASM International in honour of the memory of eminent metallurgist,
research director and author Marcus A. Grossman.
“It was a real honour to receive the award,” said Dale Atwell,
primary author of the paper.
“Matthew and I submitted our paper for publication in the journal
Metallurgical and Material Transactions and from there it was entered
in this award.
“When you look back over the list of previous winners, drawn from
all over the world, it is really something special.”
Dale Atwell obtained his first degree at the University of
Ballarat before linking up with Deakin via the CRC for CAST
Metals Manufacturing.
“I really want to thank CAST for giving me the opportunity they
did,” he said.
“There are of course other people to thank including
Matthew Barnett, and Deakin generally.”
Dale Atwell is continuing to work as a research engineer at
Deakin, supported by CAST.
Matthew Barnett is one of Deakin’s star young researchers. He
received his PhD with Deans Honours from McGill University in Montreal.
Returning to Australia, he joined Deakin where he is an Australian
Research Council QEII Research Fellow, specialising in research
into the better understanding and manipulating of the microstructure
of wrought metals.
