Deakin
enters new partnership in China
Deakin
University’s ground-breaking work in materials and fibre innovation
was showcased again in late October when a high-ranking Chinese delegation
from the Jining City and Shandong Ruyi Technology Group visited the
Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds.
Jining City in Shandong province is the birthplace of many famous Chinese
philosophers, including Confucius and Mencius. It is now a national
base for a number of important industry sectors, such as industrial
bio-tech, auto and parts manufacturing, and new textile materials.
Not only is the Shandong Ruyi Technology Group in the top
three Chinese wool processing companies, but company chairman
Mr Qiu Yafu is regarded as one of the top 10 most influential
entrepreneurs in China.
“The Shandong Ruyi Group is the first Chinese company with which
Deakin has set up an ARC Linkage Grant,” said Deakin University’s
Professor Xungai Wang.
“Deakin and Shandong Ruyi Technology Group also signed a MoU to
look at other opportunities to work together. They are very keen to
explore the potential for a research institute involving Deakin.
“About 70 per cent of Australia’s wool is processed in China,
and Shandong Ruyi Technology Group is one of the largest wool processing
companies both in China and internationally.
“So there is already a link between the two countries.
“At Deakin of course our work in wool, and particularly in the
way we can use advanced technologies and materials to improve wool quality
and processing efficiency, and other materials, too, like cotton, is
already highly regarded in China.
“This collaboration between Deakin and Shandong Ruyi Technology
Group is a very exciting extension of our involvement with the Chinese
wool industry.”
