Alfred Deakin Post-Doctoral Fellowship holders have big role to play in University’s future

Deakin University’s new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) Professor Lee Astheimer has re-affirmed the role of Alfred Deakin Post-Doctoral Fellowships in helping the University to achieve its research goals.

“Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sally Walker, has committed us to moving towards gaining a position in the top third of Australian universities in terms of research performance,” Professor Astheimer said.

“The Alfred Deakin Fellowships were introduced last year by my predecessor, Professor David Stokes as part of our development towards that goal.

“In the short time I have been at Deakin, I have seen the wisdom of David’s innovation.

“The fellowships draw on the name and history of Alfred Deakin but they are very much focussed on our future - attracting the next generations of world-class researchers as we really establish ourselves as a research-intensive university.

“The quality of the research work being undertaken will have benefits not just for the University, but for the Australian economy too and that’s something we really pride ourselves on at Deakin – research that makes a difference.

The 12 inaugural Alfred Deakin Post-Doctoral Fellowship winners were announced last year. Their research covers a wide range of topics having scientific, technological and social relevance and importance.

They were:
Dr Elizabeth Manickam – Diet and inflammation

Dr Yan Zhao – Reducing UV damage to polymer solar cells

Dr Silvia Haase – Understanding malaria pathogenesis

Dr Clare Hume – Obesity resilience among the disadvantaged

Dr Luke Henderson – Nature inspired antibiotics

Dr Nicole Oke – Migrant integration into Australia

Dr Sunil Ratnayake – Health and canola oil

Dr Jonathan Ritchie – Nation building in the South Pacific

Dr Xin Geng – Facial age estimation methods

“I am pleased to announce their work will be the subject of a special edition of our No Limits newsletter in July,” Professor Astheimer said.
