Deakin
researchers prominent at Smart Geelong awards
Deakin University’s Associate Professor
Wei Duan has won the Biotechnology Award at this year’s
Smart Geelong Researcher of the Year Awards, while the Smart
Technology Award went to Dr Lu Sun.
Associate Professor Duan won his award and
$5000 in prize money for the project: “The Development
of Novel Nano Cancer Therapeutics and Diagnostics in Geelong.”
"I am most grateful and honoured to
receive The Researcher of the Year -Biotechnology Award,”
said Associate Professor Duan.
“I am grateful for the support of
everyone involved in our Nanomedicine Program at the University.
"The Nanomedicine Program is a multidisciplinary
and multi-institutional project involving molecular cell biologists,
chemists, material scientists, pharmaceutical scientists,
oncologist and radiologists.
“We are developing new medicine that
can detect cancer cells at early stages and provide a highly
specific anti-cancer therapy that kills cancer cells efficiently.
“Our research will contribute to the
realisation of the dream of eventual cure of cancer in the
21st century.”
Dr Lu Sun won her prize for the research
project: “Optimising the UV Protection of Textiles with
Nano Zinc Oxide.”
This project looks at the application of
nano materials to a wide range of textile products, including
awnings, flags and car upholstery, used in hostile outdoor
environments.
Dr Lu Sun gained her Doctoral degree from
Key Laboratory for Supramolecular Structure and Materials
of Ministry of Education, Jilin University, China, in Physical
Chemistry (2002-2005). She joined Deakin in 2006.
